Introduction:

However, the government is now taking several measures to make the country self-reliant in defence production.

The main purpose of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the defence sector is to reduce dependence on imports and develop indigenous capabilities for defence production. The government has promulgated several policy initiatives to promote defence manufacturing in the country. Some of the key measures promulgated by the government include the 'Make in India' initiative, liberalising the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy in the defence sector, and the creation of a separate defence manufacturing corridor.

Initiatives:

The Make in India initiative was launched by the government in 2014 to promote domestic manufacturing in various sectors including defence. The aim of the initiative is to reduce dependence on imports and create jobs in the country. The government has also allowed 100% FDI in the defence sector under the automatic route. This has uplifted foreign defence companies to set up manufacturing facilities in the country.

The government is also setting up a discrete defence manufacturing corridor in Uttar Pradesh to promote defence manufacturing in the country. The corridor will have six nodes, with each node focussed on a specific area of manufacturing. The government has also announced a defence production policy to provide a framework for defence manufacturing in the country.

Functions:

India has also been taking several steps to amplify its research and development capabilities in the defence sector. The government has announced the creation of a Defence Technology Fund to promote research and development in the sector. The government is also working with academic institutions and research organisations to develop indigenous defence technologies.

The government has also liberalised the export policy for defence products. The aim is to promote the export of defence products and generate revenue for the country. The government has also streamlined the defence attainment process to make it more efficient and transparent.
